"On a skidder (…) I quickly wrote a post" Digital activism through the lens of social practice theories

Abstract

Za podjęciem go stały trzy przyczyny. This work is the result of a research project aimed at exploring the issue of digital activism from the perspective of theories of social practices, with a particular focus on climate action. There were three reasons for undertaking this project. The first reason was personal: for years, I have been active on the internet on the fringes of activist circles, observing their daily practices. With this research project, I wanted not only to better understand their practices myself, but also to create a mirror in which activists could see themselves. The second reason was dissatisfaction with the level of public debate on the phenomenon in Poland, which has become dominated by many simplifications and controversial, uncritically used terms, such as slacktivism and clicktivism. The third reason was the desire to contribute to the popularization of theories of social practices. I developed an interest in this branch of sociology while writing my master's thesis. Aware of the still low popularity of the theories of authors such as Theodore Schatzki, Elizabeth Shove, Andreas Reckwitz, and Davide Nicolini in Polish sociology, I treated this work as an attempt to write an introduction to the research approach they represent.
